I made the Forbes Top 100 Websites for Your Career list! Holy crapballs! - When I Grow Up
I made the Forbes Top 100 Websites for Your Career list! Holy crapballs! - When I Grow Up Last week, I learned that this very site made the Forbes Top 100 Websites for Your Career list. There I was, minding my business and reading Facebook, when I read a status update that I was tagged in, congratulating me for making the list. Id be lying if I didnt click the link, skip to Page 9 once I saw it went alphabetically, and start shaking when I saw myself there. I remember when they were taking submissions via tweet, comment, or email, back in August I think. I had it bookmarked for a few days cause I wanted to do a big push and ask everyone Ive ever spoken to to take a moment and let the author know about whenigrowupcoach.combut its been such a busy time for me the deadline came and went. I know one person who tweeted about me (thanks Hannah!) which is how I found out about the submissions and I hoped thatd be enough to get on their radar. I offered it up to the Forbes gods, so to say. Then, I forgot all about ituntil I saw that Facebook notification. I went a little nutso with the excitement, posting about it everywhere and essentially not being able to do my work for a couple hours. It just felt really big, but more than that, it felt really validating. Ya know, so many people in our online world talk about the education and experience you need to be seen as an expert. And although Im so proud of the decisions Ive made and the route I decided to go to become The When I Grow Up Coach, at the heart of things Im a former actress in my mid-30s with a BFA in musical theater who also has her life coaching certification. Thats it. No masters. No doctorate. No decades of experience. But when Forbes goes through 2,000 (!) websites and deems yours the one youve been working on and in for 5 years so, so diligently, so passionately, so focused on being valuable part of the Top 100 in your field, its like that masters and that doctorate all rolled into one. While Im someone who is constantly looking ahead, planning and goal-creating and whats-next-ing, Im having this accomplishment be the pat on the back I need to realize Im doing lots right. We all need that external validation once in a while. This is mine. When have you had someone recognize you for a job well done? What was it for, and how did it make you feel? Thinking back on that can show you your natural skill set and what makes you feel proud. All key things in finding and living your grown-up, passionate career! Id love to hear about em in the comments.

Writing a Cover Letter With No Experience (Example Included) - ZipJob
Writing a Cover Letter With No Experience (Example Included) Spread the loveMany job applicants struggle to write the perfect cover letter even in the best of circumstances. They recognize the important role that the cover letter plays in their effort to capture the hiring managerâs attention, but arenât always sure how to accomplish their writing goals. That effort can be even more of a struggle when they have no real work experience to include in their resume. How do you write a cover letter with no experience? While that can be a challenge, rest assured that it can be done!Who Might Need this Type of Cover Letter? There are many applicants who find themselves wrestling with this problem at the beginning of their careers. We all start somewhere. And while there was once a time when it seemed like almost every young person spent at least part of his or her youth with a part-time job or two, these days itâs more and more common for high school and college graduates to leave school without ever having worked a day in their lives. They all need to know how to write and utilize a cover letter with no experience. This also goes for people changing careers who may not have any relevant experience to the position theyre targeting. The Basic Elements of Your Cover LetterEven though itâs an entry level cover letter, no experience doesnât necessarily mean that you can skimp on details. There are certain basic elements that must be in this letter, and they are like those found in any cover letter:Basic contact information This includes your name, email address, and a phone number that can be used to reach you. While formatting can vary, itâs common to place this information at the top of the page, on the right side of the document. The company information should go on the left side of the page, and should include the company name and the name of the contact person. You also need a reference line, to define the topic â" such as âRE: Application for Office Manager PositionâThe body of your cover letter should be relat ively brief, containing roughly three paragraphs:You need an opening paragraph to introduce yourself to the hiring manager. The second paragraph should be used to showcase all the skills and qualities that match those needed for the job.Your third paragraph should detail how those traits make you the best candidate for the job.You can close with a wrap-up that tells the hiring manager that youâll be following up soon. That can be as simple as âIâll try to contact you by phone on Wednesday at around 3:00 PM to follow-up and hopefully schedule an interview. I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss the job in more detail then.âKeep the cover letter length at around half a page to 2/3 page long.Writing a Cover Letter with No ExperienceParagraph 1: The OpenerIntroduce yourself to the employer in one or two sentences by explaining who you are, which job youâre applying for, and how you learned about it. If someone referred you to the job, feel free to mention that (if youâre already using LinkedIn, that can be a great place to get these types of job referrals). For example,âMy name is Sarah and Iâm a recent graduate from the University of Southern Alabama. I learned about your companyâs job opening for an XYZ operator from Smith Smithington on LinkedIn. Iâm very interested in applying for that position, and am confident that I have the requisite skills and characteristics that your company is seeking.âParagraph 2: The Skill RundownThe next paragraph is critical. For your cover letter, no experience is available. That means that you need to focus attention on the relevant skills that you possess that can make you a good candidate for the job. There are several different things that you can include here:Personal characteristics and strengths that demonstrate that you can thrive in a professional environmentCoursework and volunteer experience that may have given you an opportunity to showcase your talentsThe general skill sets that you p ossess that can be transferable to the job at handActual achievements that are relevant to the position. When developing this paragraph, be sure to refer to the job posting. You should have already selected various critical keywords from that posting, so make certain that you use them in the letter when discussing your strengths. If they used the words self-starter, then try to identify an achievement that demonstrates that quality in your own life â" and use the same term when describing that accomplishment. For example,âI note that the position requires someone whoâs not afraid to take the initiative in group project settings. Iâve always prided myself on my ability to be a self-starter, and have personally launched major website endeavors for our USA band fundraising activities and campus book drives. In both efforts, our groups raised funds that exceeded the respective target goals by 50% and 63%.âIf you can do something similar with your other skills, you can lay the gr oundwork for that all-important third paragraph. This connects the dots between your skills and the employerâs needs.Paragraph 3: The Sales PitchThe final paragraph should be the functional equivalent of your elevator pitch â" encapsulated in one powerful sales pitch. Try to tell very brief stories that demonstrate why youâre the right person for the job. For example,âMy organizational skills have also been put to the test in other real-world settings, as when I worked on the Mayorâs campaign and helped assemble her get-out-the-vote effort. During my high school career, I took the initiative in developing the sales campaign used to fund the purchase of new equipment for the basketball team, and subsequently organized the city-wide sales effort to fund our trip to the state tournament.âFinally, dont forget to add a call to action (Super Important) asking the hiring manager to call and schedule an interview. You should also thank them for the consideration.Putting it all to gether Cover Letter With No Experience Example:The Bottom LineWhen youâre trying to put together a cover letter with no experience, it can be a real challenge to convince an employer that you have what it takes to handle his companyâs job. 4 Steps to Creating a Standout Resume
4 Steps to Creating a Standout ResumeYour objective as a job seeker should always be to create a resume that stands out from the pack in a way that encourages a hiring manager to call you for an interview. There are a lot of great candidates out there that can make standing out a bit of a challenge, but since you bring so many skills to the table yourself, you simply need to create a resume that proves youre interview-worthy.1. Create a Standout Job TargetOne of the best ways to ensure that your resume stands out from the pack is to create a memorable job target. The job target works as a marketing toola headline that grabs the readers attention and encourages them to read on. The target is usually only one sentence and works to sell you as a candidate. An example of a job target may be Salesperson of the Year with 15 Years of Experience Targets Managerial Sales Position. Get creative with it, and see what attention-grabbing target you can come up with to make your resume stand out fr om the crowd.2. Surprise the Company With Your KnowledgeCompanies are accustomed to having candidates who have no knowledge of the organization apply for positions. So believe it or not, you could stand out as a candidate simply by showcasing your knowledge of the company. This could be accomplished in your career summary section where you list the highlights of your professional life. For instance, instead of simply stating that you were salesperson of the year, you could mention that you want to use your award-winning sales skills to help the company reach its goal of $15 mio in revenue this year. Learn this type of information by browsing the companys website or searching for press releases. Doing so could make a world of difference in helping you stand out from the pack.3. Add a Few TestimonialsInstead of simply adding a reference sheet, consider adding some testimonials to your resume. A resume testimonial works similarly to a product testimonial in that the person writing it is vouching for you. Find a few people who have great things to say about you even consider pulling some quotes from your LinkedIn pagewith permission from those who recommended youthen add two or three sentences from two or three people to your resume. Youd be surprised by how intriguing these kind words are to hiring managers.4. Link to an Industry-Related BlogFinally, consider starting a professional blog that discusses serious aspects of your field. Employers love to see candidates who are serious about their industry, so what better way to show youre serious than dedicating time to a blog? Just dont forget to add a link to that blog on your resume.Sometimes it can be challenging to determine effective ways to stand out from strong competition in a job search. But by creating a standout resume, youre well on your way to fulfilling your goal. For additional tips and advice on resumes and cover letters, follow us on Twitter GreatResume or visit our blog.

Duke William and Prince George Just Crushed Gender Stereotypes in a Big Way
Duke William and Prince George Just Crushed Gender Stereotypes in a Big Way If yure anything like the rest of us on the internet, you cant get enough of the royal family. Whether its reading about what dress Meghan is wearing or what Kate eats on her eggs, these people have me hooked. But were all addicted to the royal family for a good reason.William, Kate, George and Charlotte / Source InstagramTheyre the symbol of the modern family. They represent what we expect from ourselves or others, and what we deem acceptable or even classy. They set up our narrative of whats normal at home, at work, within our marriages, and within society writ large. Thats power, and its enticing to watch. This representation of acceptable has definitely changed over time. I mean, hey, Prince Harry married an American divorcee who also happens to be a woman of color. That was deemed pretty progressive, even in 2018. But it was also normalized, because it became part of the narrative of this normal family we all happen to watch 24/7.Prince George is doing something pretty similar, whether he knows it or not.In a video shared by Kensington Palace, William, the Duke of Cambridge, told a young dancer that George is doing dancing as well... He loves it. And it turns out George isnt doing any old dancing. According to People, hes enrolled in a one-year ballet curriculum at Thomass Battersea Ballet School. The prince taking ballet classes and mora importantly, loving it is breaking down gender barriers left and right.William and George / Source InstagramTheres a common idea that dance is for girls. Especially ballet, which is traditionally represented with pink bows, leotards, and ballet slippers. But shedding the idea that certain sports or hobbies are only acceptable for one gender lets kids pursue their passions without being bullied or dissuaded. Thats not just good for them Its good for us. The more we can get talented people to do what theyre best at, the more productive we are as a s ociety. The Duke a traditional icon of masculinity and the archetypical father-figure encouraging his son to do whatever he loves, even if its traditionally girly, is the example we need to break down gender barriers. And Im sure Prince George is just enjoying the heck out of it too. What a win-win.More on the royalsDont miss out on articles like these. Sign up
